WHAT I LIKED
DESIRE
Picking it up off the rack, putting it in my van, carrying it to the water – I want to ride it, I want to ride it, I want to ride it. The new Goya One boards are so light, and frankly, so inspired. New construction, new mast track, fin boxes, no deck sticker — everything targets weight savings. The older I get, the weaker I get. A board this light sparks hope. Let’s go!
UNLEASHED
As advertised, the 77 and 85 liter models leap onto a plane. And better, the acceleration doesn’t lead to you’re-getting-older reminders. Full speed, through heavy chop, my knees feel no pain. New dual density pads are one reason. For a board this light, and this fast, the smooth ride is welcomed. There’s no ticking clock to my session. Go go.
FLIGHT TIME
What I liked most about riding these boards is their ability to head upwind, and not decelerate while launching off chop. Here in the Gorge, where every ramp is upwind of you, carrying speed into a ramp is a big deal. Add to the mix the lightweight construction, and blistering top speeds that are not punishing for “mature” riders, jumping becomes fun again. Let’s fly!
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
Finding faults in these boards has been a tall order. While many makers are focused on foils, wings and paddles, Goya remains loyal to windsurfing. These shapes, and the construction they draw on, embody Goya’s passion for the sport. And it’s contagious. I’m a believer, and every session more so.
My only quip thus far is this: While I enjoy swell riding with the Goya One 77 and 85 liter models, they do sacrifice a touch of slashing fun when compared to Goya’s Custom Thruster and Quad lines. No surprises there. But worth considering for those who put wave riding first.
BEST SUITS
The 2024 Goya One 12 best suits intermediate to expert riders looking for a board that’s effortless to hop aboard, and tough to outgrow. An easy board to recommend for the Gorge and far beyond. And for those looking to re-stoke that windsurfing fire with the simple, unbridled fun that started it all, look here.
Special thanks to Dasher of Dasher Films for the killer photos. Look him up for winging lessons in Bonaire this winter, and maybe, next season in the Gorge!
