Doc’s Proplugs are the vented earplugs Gorge riders actually keep in their ears. Designed by a surfing doctor and made in the USA, they keep cold water, wind and spray out of the ear canal while you can still hear your buddies, the boat and the wind picking up.

Repeated cold water and wind exposure is what causes surfer’s ear (exostosis), a bony growth that slowly narrows the ear canal. A long season of winging, kiting and windsurfing on the Columbia is exactly that kind of exposure. Proplugs are the simple fix.

“I’ve worn Doc’s Proplugs for over 20 years, from whitewater kayaking to kiteboarding and now foiling. They’re the only earplugs I’ve found that truly keep the water out and still let sound in, so I can hear my buddies and barges. I use the vented, no-leash version. It stays put through crashes and is comfortable enough to forget about. I wear an XL, but most riders land in the Medium to Large range. Highly recommended. One warning: watch out for knockoffs. I’ve tried the fake Docs, and they’re seriously irritating to wear.”

Size guide

Proplugs are pre-molded in sizes that fit about 95% of adults. From smallest to largest: Med/Small, S, M, L, XL, XXL. Note that Med/Small is smaller than S.

• Most adults fit M or L. Start there if you’re unsure.
• Fit check: seat the plug, then hum. If the hum sounds louder in the plugged ear, you have a good seal.
• Between sizes? Go with the largest size that still feels snug and comfortable.
